AED was founded by Tim Hetherington in 2008. AED has offices Edinburgh and Bath. Our staff all share an enthusiasm for engineering the unusual. Unlike many other practices today we still undertake the majority of detailed design and coordination work in-house.

AED has some interesting specialisms in the space between structural engineering and manufacturing (such as might be required for pubic artworks, elaborate staircases or research plant) and also in forensic investigation and expert witness services.

We do not promote one structural form or technology over another. We find that sensible, attractive, economic hybrid structures, built from locally available materials, are often the right solution.
