AED was founded by Tim Hetherington in 2008 and is still run by Tim, now supported by two associates: Jim Bradford and Craig MacLaren. We have offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, both among thriving communities of built environment professionals. These surroundings help contribute to an ongoing sense of excitement in the company about our work as engineers.
We have nine staff in total, who together bring extensive experience to bear, both in the design office and on site. We have been involved in numerous award-winning projects, some of which can be viewed on our portfolio pages. We all share an enthusiasm for projects regarded as out of the ordinary but also for giving more routine projects the attention that our clients expect.
AED has various interesting specialisms, but these exist as part of a wide skill base. We think this broad perspective is necessary for overall success. As part of this outlook, we do not promote one structural form or technology over another. We prefer a pragmatic approach, where such things are employed for the particular advantages they offer. We find that sensible, attractive and economic hybrid structures are often the outcome.
Information on the general engineering consultancy services we provide can be found here. Beyond these, we have specialisms in: off-site construction; lightweight, demountable and mobile structures; and engineering for installation art. Unlike many other practices today we still undertake the majority of detailed design and coordination work in-house, including: secondary structural packages such as staircases; structural glass, and connection design for steel, concrete and timber frames. Of further note is our position at the forefront of BIM implementation at our scale of operation.
Overall, our varied experience and cooperative style puts us in position to assist our clients in a helpful way, using language they understand. Productive relationships result.
